Over the weekend, 21-year-old amapiano sensation Zee Nxumalo headlined the first ever televised Soweto Derby Half-Time Show. Typically, the performances at half-time are restricted to the fans in attendance, but this time around the performance was televised on Supersport and SABC, with over 5 million viewers across the globe.
"It was such an amazing and unforgettable experience for me and I'm super grateful to Melody and everyone from the Orlando Pirates organisation for the opportunity," says Zee. "I was so nervous but I'm really happy with how it all came together. This is another highlight for me and a dream come true. I'm living the life I always wanted to live and I can't wait to see what's next!"
Following her historic performance at the Derby, Zee also went on to perform the platinum-selling hit single "Funk 55" at Big Brother Mzansi on Sunday night. Her electrifying performance saw her enter and hold her place on the local X (formerly Twitter) trends list throughout the night as viewers took to the social media platform to give her props for the showcase.
"Zee is arguably the hottest new artist in South Africa right now, and this weekend was the perfect culmination of the momentum we've been building with her over the past few months," says Zee's manager, Shingai Darangwa. "We're now looking ahead to the release of Zee's upcoming single, 'Thula Mabota', which is already viral on TikTok and trending on Shazam despite it being unreleased. Apart from this there's a lot more that we're working on with Zee that we can't wait to share."
Zee has been enjoying an incredible breakthrough year as her collaborations "Funk 55", "Shay'moto" and "Nguwe" have become national hits over the past few months. This success has seen her grow into a household name in a short space of time with a growing social media following now totaling over 1.2 million across all platforms.
